RRB JE Eligibility

  • Age Limit (as on 01.01.2026): The age limit is 18 to 33 years. Age relaxation is applicable for reserved categories: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (NCL), and 10 years for PwBD candidates.
  • Educational Qualification:
    • Junior Engineer (JE): Three years Diploma in the relevant Engineering discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, etc.) OR B.E./B.Tech in the same discipline from a recognized University/Institute.
    • Depot Material Superintendent (DMS): Three years Diploma in Engineering (any discipline) from a recognized University/Institute.
    • Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): Bachelor’s Degree in Science (B.Sc.) with Physics and Chemistry, with a minimum of 45% marks.
  • Medical Standards: Candidates must meet the specific medical standards for their chosen posts. These range from A-3 to C-1.
    • A-3: (e.g., JE/Signal, JE/Track Machine) – Physically fit, Distant Vision: 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (power not to exceed 2D). Must pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, etc.
    • B-1: (e.g., JE/Electrical General Services) – Physically fit, Distant Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power not to exceed 4D).
    • C-1: (e.g., JE/Workshop, DMS, CMA) – Physically fit, Distant Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses.
    • Important Note: Candidates who have undergone Lasik or other corrective eye surgery are **not eligible** for posts with A-3 medical standards.

RRB JE Selection Process

The recruitment process consists of the following stages:

  1. 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-1): A common screening test for all posts.
    • Subjects: Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15), General Science (30).
    • Total Questions: 100 | Duration: 90 minutes.
    • Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
    • Normalization: Marks will be normalized. This stage is only for screening.
  2. 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-2): Candidates will be shortlisted (15x vacancies) for the 2nd Stage CBT based on their normalized marks from CBT-1.
    • Subjects: General Awareness (15), Physics & Chemistry (15), Basics of Computers (10), Basics of Environment (10), Technical Abilities (100).
    • Total Questions: 150 | Duration: 120 minutes.
    • Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark.
    • A virtual calculator will be available on-screen.
  3. Document Verification (DV): Candidates who qualify in CBT-2 will be called for DV in a 1:1 ratio based on merit and post preference.
  4. Medical Examination (ME): Candidates must pass the required medical fitness test for their allotted post.

The final merit list will be prepared based on the marks obtained in the 2nd Stage CBT only.

RRB JE Application Fee

  • For all candidates (except fee concession categories): ₹500/- (An amount of ₹400/- will be refunded after appearing in the 1st Stage CBT).
  • For SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, and EBC candidates: ₹250/- (This entire amount will be refunded after appearing in the 1st Stage CBT).

To get the refund, candidates must attend the 1st Stage CBT and provide valid bank account details.

How to Apply RRB JE

Candidates can apply online through the official website of any one RRB of their choice.

  1. Create an Account: First, candidates must create an account on the RRB portal using the ‘Create an Account’ link. If you already have an account from a previous RRB recruitment, you can use the same credentials.
  2. Live Photo Capture: During the application, a live photo will be captured via webcam or your mobile’s front camera. You must be in non-white clothing against a plain background. Do not wear a cap, mask, or glasses.
  3. Upload Documents: You will need to upload a scanned copy of your signature (30-49 KB) and, if applicable, your SC/ST certificate (up to 400 KB PDF) to avail the free travel pass.
  4. One RRB Only: You can apply to only one RRB. Submitting multiple applications to different RRBs will lead to the rejection of all your applications.
  5. Modification Fee: If you need to make corrections (except for ‘Create an Account’ details and your chosen RRB) after submission, you can do so during the modification window by paying a fee of ₹250/-.

Can I apply to more than one RRB?

No, you must apply to only one RRB. If you submit multiple applications, all your applications will be rejected.

Is there negative marking in the exams?

Yes, there is a negative marking of 1/3rd for every incorrect answer in both the 1st and 2nd Stage CBTs.

I have a B.Tech degree. Can I apply for the Junior Engineer post?

Yes, the notification (Annexure A) states that a B.E./B.Tech degree is acceptable in lieu of a three-year Diploma in Engineering for the JE posts.

I had Lasik eye surgery. Can I apply for JE (Signal)?

No. The notification clearly states that candidates who have undergone Lasik or other corrective eye surgery are **not eligible** for posts with A-3 medical standards, which includes JE (Signal) and JE (Track Machine).
